India Looking to Censor and Rate Video Games

January 3rd, 2008 Posted in Business, News, Software

Indian news site Daily News & Analysis reports that the country’s government is looking into adopting a bill that would give them the power to censor and rate video games. The country’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will act like the North American ESRB, rating games before they are available to the public.

“This is true that there is a proposal that the Censor Board should start censoring all video games–and I agree with proposal totally,” India’s Censor Board chairperson Sharmila Tagore told the website. “We have already submitted our proposal to the ministry and the draft is being considered by them.”

The bill will allow them to rate games into certain age groups and will require game manufacturers to place labels on a game’s packaging. Interestingly, the censor board may also make developers remove certain features from a game if they are “not suitable for children” and would like their game to be available in the country.

…they have a rating system, but then would ask developers to cut things out on teh games not suitable for kids? Why are people stupid, is it some sort of disease that politicians and lawyers spread around?
