Since its release on December 1st in Japan, Wii Fit has become a bit of a Japanese phenomenon, selling over a million units and virtually completely sold out still, it’s almost reminiscent of the Wii itself. Not only have sales of the game done well, but a general upswing in Wii sales have also occurred, with other titles like Mario Galaxy suddenly selling in troves. One thing is for sure, Wii Fit is a success in Japan, but will the same occur here in North America?
Originally the game was supposed to see a Q1 realease, but that seemed unlikely when Nintendo was unable to meet supply in Japan, which is often hard to due when dealing with a peripheral device. Fortunately with a May 20th release, we are no far out from training the masses to be fit. The running joke is Nintendo needs to retool the Balance Board for weights above 300 lbs, but in all seriousness, they probably will need to! Some would argue that Nintendo has missed prime marketing opportunity, at New Years when everyone is getting into the next weight loss craze. But if there is one thing I know about the mainstream audience, they won’t start catching wind of the product until the better half of 2008, and when New Years 2009 roles around, you sure can bet Nintendo will at least have a good amount of stock for their next big thing.
