Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility “Winding Down”
January 11th, 2008 by Rajiv Ashrafi in Business, News, Xbox360
Kotaku reports that the Xbox 360 might not receive any backwards compatibility updates in the future. Speaking with Albert Penello, group marketing manager for the console, at CES, they touched on the future of said updates, with Penello saying, “I don’t know if we have plans to do any more releases.” He continued, “it feels like we kind of hit the point of diminishing returns there,” concluding that they are “winding down” development of such updates.
He points out that Microsoft kept their promise of porting better-selling Xbox games to the new console, stating that outside of Halo 2, internal data shows very few Xbox games being played and that BC updates are “not being downloaded that much anymore.”
It’s sad to see Microsoft closing down backwards compatibility updates, but with Xbox Originals coming up, there’s no need to complain. Right?
