It seems long overdue, but there’s finally going to be a “Highlander” video game. The original film having spawned numerous sequels and a handful of television shows that still linger on in the consciousness of fans will be coming to the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this year. Eidos will be developing the game using the gorgeous potential of the Unreal Engine 3. To avoid stepping on the toes of Highlander canon they’ve brought in a new immortal for you to play: Owen MacLeod. Yes, he’s indeed of the clan of Connor from the original film. He’s the Scotsman’s ancestor and begins his life (and the game) in Gaul. The son of a tribal chieftain he eventually gets captured by the Roman Empire where (surprise surprise) he’s forced to become a gladiator. As gladiators are wont to do, you die. Luckily you discover that you’re now an immortal and can only be killed via decapitation. You’ll be fighting through the centuries after that, presumably jumping between particular periods and wars, ending up in a futuristic New York. There you’ll be hunted by a mysterious and powerful immortal bent on collecting your head and thus your power. To defeat him or her you’ll have to gain power, which can be accomplished in two ways. firstly is the classic method whereby immortals gain power: killing other immortals. Slice off the head of another immortal and you gain his or her knowledge and power. Secondly there’s a mystical stone that has been broken into three pieces. Reassemble it to gain near-ultimate power (and complete the main storyline).
