Wii Surpasses 5 Million Sold In Japan

January 23rd, 2008 by Brian Lockhart in News, Wii

Just another trophy to add to Nintendo’s growing case, the Wii has surpassed 5 million units sold in Japan alone, in just 60 weeks. It may not seem like a big deal as the Wii is currently sitting over 7 million in North America, but is actually a major accomplishment, that hasn’t been seen by any consoles since the 80’s. (The exception being the Nintendo DS, a handheld, which is ahead of the Wii, at this point in time, by about 800 thousand units). For more comparison, Nintendo Gamecube was at 1.68 million in the same period and PS3 is at 1.69 in the same period as well.

Either way, N64 and Gamecube both did not surpass 6 million in the total lifetime sales, which the Wii will no doubt breeze by in the coming months. Despite how things proceed from now on, enough Wii’s have been sold to make Nintendo more than satisfied.
