Brazil Bans Counter-Strike and EverQuest

January 24th, 2008 Posted in Articles, Business, News, Online, PC

In a move that can only aggravate gamers, Brazil this week imposed a ban on Counter-Strike and EverQuest, claiming that they incite violence and are harmful to the player’s health. This was ordered in October 2007 by a Federal court, though it was not immediately implemented. This effectively bans the sale of the game across the country; it also applies to subscribers of the Sony MMOG.

Carlos Alberto Simoes, the judge that passed the ruling, said that the games encouraged the “subversion of public order, were an attack against the democratic state and the law and against public security.” I fail to see what he means.

This just shows how stupid, unprepared and *slow* our justice is.

These games are barely played nowadays, so I don’t think it’ll affect many gamers (Carmageddon was prohibited here too, but it never stopped anyone from playing it).

The way Brazil deals with violence just makes the problem worse. After watching the news discussing about this I sat on a couch and read a local newspaper — The violence reported in it is far worse that any game.

    Simply put: pathetic.
