Rumor: 80 Gb PS3 Being Discontinued

January 24th, 2008 Posted in Business, News, PlayStation 3, Rumor by Brian Lockhart

It may seem a little unbelievable, but we’ve already seen this happen twice before with two other PS3 SKU’s. All of which were proceeded by rumors and eventually more conclusive retailer leaks. The above has been floating around the internet today, and is a leaked internal memo for Best Buy employee eyes only. Of course, as all good things, that doesn’t stop an anonymous source from not keeping it that way. According to the memo, Sony is once again cutting their losses and removing the 80 Gb units from the equation. I say all for the better quite frankly.

Despite the fact that this completely will put an end to backwards compatibility, its a worthwhile money saving experience, and should hopefully move the PS3 brand into a less confusing more consumer friendly territory. Besides, if you care strongly about backwards compatibility, you are better off securing a used 60 Gb SKU that’s still probably floating around for cheap. Now that another SKU is out of the equation, will a new price drop be on the horizon?
