Sony Shrinks Blu-ray, More Affordable

January 26th, 2008 by Brian Lockhart in News, PlayStation 3

Sony is doing absolutely everything it can to constantly bring cost down on the PS3, in order to at least recover some of the loses they have had to put up with. Now Sony and Nichia have teamed up together and developed a smaller and cheaper Blu-ray laser, which will likely start being used in their equipment very soon. The 3mm laser will first be used in their laptops later this year, but a similar laser could very likely appear in PS3’s down the road as well.

With the PS3 80Gb model out of the picture, any new SKU that Sony might have up its sleeve would make sense to be released with the new cost effective laser. Or 40Gb models could be loaded up and receive a price drop, which might also be in the cards for 2008. We’ll keep you up to date the moment we hear any announcements out of Sony, but at least now with this new tech in hand, it gives them some options and flexibility if costs need to be cut in the near future.
