Smash Mania Leads To Smashing Shortages

January 29th, 2008 by Brian Lockhart in Business, News, Rumor, Wii

Rumors have been floating around that Japan will be in a wave of Smash Bros. shortages, after the game was pushed back a week, it would seem that something would have to be the cause. Primarily that Nintendo had not yet printed enough discs to meet demand. But just how bad could those shortages wind out? A quote from the retailer National Console Report, a New York based importer has this to say:

“Our Japanese and Hong Kong suppliers have notified us that Nintendo will only ship 25% of the game this week due to a production shortage.”

In laymen terms, if a vendor ordered 1000 copies, they’ll only be receiving 250, which may very well fall short of their pre-order targets. Therefore, a lot of Japanese gamers, even if they pre-ordered, will not be receiving a copy later this week. Fortunately, we should avoid the issues completely, as we wait another freaking month and a half to get our grubs on the game.

Obviously from the sounds of things, Nintendo simply wanted to just hit their release date window, even if it meant not enough time to produce discs. Those gamers lucky enough to actually get their hands on the game will likely love the decision, but for the rest of Japan, they will have to simply pretend the game was delayed by more than just one week.
