Rumor: Starcraft MMO For China

February 2nd, 2008 Posted in MMO, News, PC, Rumor by Brian Lockhart

Blizzard has already gone on the record to be developing a new MMO, hopefully to continue the success they’ve already experienced with WoW. If anyone had to create the WoW killer, it seems appropriate the Blizzard would be the ones to do so. However, some rumors floating around state that while the title will in fact be based on the Star Craft universe, it will only be available in China.

“Caijing Magazine reported that the first foreign online game to be operated by Netease, which used to rely on independent R&D, would be Starcraft Online, developed by US-based Blizzard, quoting an industry insider as saying.”

Of course, the rumor is completely unfounded, and therefore not likely true. While it seems pretty obvious that Blizzard would look towards Starcraft as their next online universe, it’s hard to believe they would limit themselves to only a foreign market. World of Warcraft remains extremely popular in many different markets, including North America, so a golden opportunity such as that would be hard to turn up. Then again, Blizzard likely doesn’t want to mess with their huge subscriber base, and since it doesn’t seem to be shrinking anytime fast, no point in reinventing the wheel.
