PS3 Cell CPU Down To 45nm

February 8th, 2008 Posted in Business, Featured, Hardware, News, PlayStation 3, Technology by James

IBM has successfully shrunk the Cell chip to 45nm, meaning that future PS3 owners can look to cheaper, cooler and more power efficient consoles. The new 45nm version reduce power consumption by 40 percent, and die size by 34 percent, making it a lot more affordable not only to manufacture, but to cool once it’s inside the PS3.

IBM has also made specific changes to the PS3 version of the Cell, which is even smaller and cooler than those found in IBM’s servers. The new Cell chips are expected to appear in PS3s in the second half of this year.
