Ontario Hands Out 1 Million To Game Devs

February 12th, 2008 by Brian Lockhart in Business, News, Online, Xbox360

Ontario (my home province) is actually making a strange effort towards game developers, handing out cash incentives to get them to stick around and keep churning out quality products. The move games especially from pressure of Quebec, which has huge subsidies that pay upwards of 50-60% of game developer wages. That’s why a lot of big name studio’s hail from Quebec.

Ontario has run the OMDC Video Game Prototype Initiative, in which they awarded two developers 500k each for upcoming projects. Silicon Knight, one of the winners will be developing “a third-person action/psychological thriller,” releasing in 2010. And coming to all consoles. Digital Extremes (hailing from my hometown!) is developing “a third-person action game with an old-school horror theme” with their 500k, for the 360, PS3 and PC.

It will be interesting to see what these projects turn out to be, but the rumor mill is already in full swing, as people are already taking a stab at the titles, figuring Silicon may very well be in development at an Eternal Darkness sequel.
