It seems that earlier rumors about Microsoft sitting down with Sony to discuss getting blu-ray drives for the Xbox 360 are false, or at least Microsoft wants us to believe they were. With the failure of HD-DVD in the commerical market Microsoft plans on focusing on what many consider to be the wave of the future: digital downloads via their Xbox Live Marketplace. While it seems like it’ll be a long time before the general populace converts to digital media entirely, the gaming segment of said populace tends to be far more tech-friendly, so this might not be the worst move. Since Microsoft is reportedly already working on the next incarnation of the Xbox it’s possible that they’re simply going to stick with HD-DVD technology. The squeals and grunts of many internet forumgoers that Blu-ray is superior due to a higher memory capacity is easily fixed for most games by simply having multiple discs. It would hamper massively open games like Oblivion, but maybe I’m wrong and they’ve got other plans in mind.
