ps3_80gb_box In a surprising twist of events, Sony America VP of marketing Scott Steiberg revealed in an interview that the company underestimated the demand for the 80GB PS3 model, saying that $499 didn’t seem “that big of a deal” to consumers.

He cites the additional hard disk space and backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games being the driving factor behind the 80GB model, which has since been phased out and replaced with the cheaper 40GB model. The company hopes on generating “mass market appeal” by marketing the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle and the DualShock 3 which are coming out soon.
