Nintendo Demos Super Mario Sluggers For Wii

We’ve been well aware of the upcoming Mario baseball title for quite some time, although details have been pretty sparse as it has stayed quite low on the radar. At a press conference today however, Nintendo is pulling back the curtain on a lot of their forthcoming products within the next four months. That means expect to hear a lot about Wii Fit, Mario Kart, more details about this upcoming Homestar project, and a smattering of DS titles as well.

But the real news so far was the demoing of the new Super Mario Sluggers, or Mario Super Sluggers (depending on which journalist doing a live report you ask). The game will naturally take on the same feel as Wii Sports baseball, but with classic Nintendo icon and more functionality than the bear bones Wii Sports experience. Pitching requires you to pull back the Wii remote and throw it in time with onscreen queues. Throwing is controlled by simply waggling in the direction you want to throw the ball and batting will obviously been quite similar to the successful mechanic in Wii Sports.

6 new characters were also revealed to the Mario baseball universe; Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Waluigi, Toad, Toadette, and Boo. That certainly rounds out a pretty good roster of icons bringing up the total count to 22. The usual sporting characters all seem to be well represented, so those familiar with Mario brands of sports will certainly not be disappointed. Watch for more news surely to pop out of the even, with hopefully some video footage.
