Following up on last week’s announcement that the BBC iPlayer service is available to Wii users, a group of hackers have brought the video service to the PS3, creating an unofficial portal where users from the console can access television content.

The hacked site tricks the BBC’s servers into thinking that the PS3 console is actually a Wii, serving videos directly through the web browser.

“It’s mainly a demonstration of how easily the BBC could support the PS3 with their Wii version,” points out a post on the unofficial PS3 iPlayer portal. “This does nothing more than mask your PS3’s user-agent string and makes half a dozen changes to make the JavaScript and CSS function correctly on the PS3.”

According to the post, the hack took only a day to produce. BBC recently criticized Sony and Microsoft for having too tight control over their browsers, noting that “they [the companies] want it done within their shop, and their shop only.”
