GTA IV: PS3 vs. 360 in the United Kingdom
There are essentially two approaches to releasing video games: either you stick with a company and a console and hope people like your games enough that they’ll buy that console just to play your games, or you spread your seed far and wide, sowing in any field that seems fertile enough for a cash crop. Many successful franchises do this: Metal Gear Solid remains strongly in the Sony camp for the most part, Bungie despite regaining their freedom from Microsoft has still made no moves towards breaking their partnership with them. Nintendo sinks its claws deeper into the youth of the world every year with yet more Pokemon games. Some titles however are just too big to stick to one system. Since its inception the Grand Theft Auto games have garnered both acclaim and criticism, with most of the criticism coming from outside of the gaming community. There’s no doubt that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV will be a big seller all around, but if the UK is anything to judge by it seems that the majority of sales are already swinging in one direction. Asda, one of the biggest supermarket chains in the UK, has let it be known that in the presale department the PS3 version of the game is outselling the Xbox 360 by about three to one. It seems that at least for the Queen’s gamers, the promise of downloadable content in the future holds little appeal. These numbers are solely from the UK however; as we’ve seen for years there tends to be a preference (bias?) towards certain consoles in certain regions. You can be sure that GTAIV sales for the Xbox in Japan will be abysmally low.

Well since Rockstar stiffed Xbox 360 on a special price for the game in a bundle package. Microsoft are putting together their own OVER PRICED BUNDLE! So how much are you will to fork over for an Arcade 360, Halo 3 and GTA4? …or how about an Elite 360 with these two games?
Now keep your crying quiet about PS3 prices, cuz you’ll be paying near $700 for an Elite, Halo 3 and GTA4!!! …..now tell that ain’t a ripoff!
NO WIRELESS, NO BLURAY PLAYER, and other such niceties that come standard on a PS3. Then tell me who will sell the most GTA4 Bundles, Sony PS3 or M$ Xbox 360???
!!!

@Utero
LOLz ….WTF? Oviosly you play games on the inferior X360 that certainly has a ton of cheap dime store games over DLC, but still only has Gears to show for any real decent EXCLUSIVE Content. While PS3 we have Ratchet and Clank, Motorstorm, Uncharted and all the same multi-platform games.
Plus there is no game on 360 or PC that can touch the (demo no less) GT-5 Prologue. Both HAZE and MGS4 have no comparable on 360. Neither does Little Big Planet and the only in game footage of Crysis running on a console is on PS3. Due to release this year! ….where did any X360 version go? Probably same place as HAZE, EXCLUSIVE!!!
Does the X360 even have one game that can compare to FFXIII or White Knight Story? How about WarDevil? ….plus don’t forget Resistance 2 or course don’t leave out Killzone 2. You know the game that is running DX10 features with Deferred Rendering and 4X MSAA!
Before Sony and Nvidia drop the bomb, you people need to consider that both API driver sets for X360 and PS3 are locked to next gen hardware. That being of course DX10 and OpenGL ES 2.0 which is nothing like OpenGL 2.0 (full). OpenGL ES 2.0 was designed by engineers that included those from Nvidia and Sony for future Next Gen Embedded Devices. Including PowerVR SGX (DX10 comparable feature set including Shader Model 4.0) to run the Cell Phone or Mobile PC you buy tomorrow. But along with that it was designed with the PS3 in Mind from the start and indeed before it was final RSX was deemed OpenGL ES 2.0 Compliant. It is now being integrated with the DX10 features for PS3 and Cell Phones (including a new Sony Ericson PSP Phone with an Nvidia 2500 Mobile GPU and 720P display!

Asda… this is information from a grocery store that sells video games next to Heat magazine and family sized bags of Maltesers, hardly a barometer for the potential success of a game on a certain system.
Now if you wanted to know about the popularity of Broccoli over Butternut squash, they’d be the guys to ask.

well after all the unresearched banter from randomers as usual, you can check the results for the UK as of 29/05/08
PS3 sold 570,000
360 sold 750,000
thats 180,000 difference.
