Iron Man Not Affected by GTA IV

Some low level Marvel executives were likely wringing their hands worriedly this weekend with the debut of Iron Man coming mere days after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV. With so much overlap between the comic and gaming crowds there did seem reasonable cause for concern.

When the dust (made mostly out of popcorn particles stamped underfoot by movie-goers) settled, it seems that there wasn’t much to be worried about. The movie pulled in $104.2 million, certainly nothing to scoff at. Was it Robert Downey Jr.’s star power? Or, the love of the general public for action flicks heavy with quality effects? Maybe it was the frustrations of freezing games that sent gamers to the theaters in droves. Much more likely though is the sheer fact that despite how excited many people were for GTA IV, they were probably also excited for Iron Man, and even the most hardcore gamers take a break every now and then.
