It might not have the mass appeal of the Wii or the brute processing power of the PS3 but in the console war the Xbox 360 has refused to quit. Microsoft announced today that its console was the first of the current generation to hit ten million sales in the United States. Microsoft’s console of course had a leg up on the competition, coming out a full year earlier than the Nintendo and Sony offerings.
Much of Microsoft’s success in the gaming world is due to Americans as sales in all other parts of the world have only come close to matching those sales figures. In total the Xbox 360 has sold about 19 million units which isn’t a huge surprise as for Japan, one of the most video-game hungry nations in the world, the Xbox 360 is the sadly limp steamed vegetables that even the dog doesn’t want while the PS3 and the Wii are the flame-grilled tender beef and oven-roasted golden brown potatoes.
“History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle. We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry,” according to Don Mattrick, Microsoft’s senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business. It’s hard to say though if anyone will really be a loser in this battle as the market for video games these days is far bigger than it was when Nintendo and Sega were battling it out for the top position.
