Beyond Good & Evil Sequel in Pre-production

Originality isn’t exactly rewarded well in the gaming industry – both Beyond Good & Evil and Psychonauts come to mind. The former, a Michael Ancel masterpiece, fared well with reviewers and went on to get hundreds of columns asking gamers to buy the game to ensure a sequel, but it just didn’t do well at retail to warrant a second game.
However, all that may be about to change. Speaking to French gaming magazine Jeux Video, Michael Ancel revealed that they are actually working on a sequel to the game and that it has been in pre-production mode at his studio for years. 1UP has a translated transcript that offers some more details:
“Beyond Good & Evil was regarded as being one of the best games of 2003. Unfortunately it didn’t get the business success to which it was entitled. We’ve actually been working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 in pre-production for a year, and we’re continuing to do do small-committee research on it. At the moment the game is still at the outline stage as Ubisoft hasn’t yet technically given its agreement. There are however 10 to 12 people working on the project right now.”
We want the game to be set in the continuity of the first title with a large variety of gameplay types and plenty of emotional resonance in the gameplay and the characters. This time we’re examining the future of the planet and its relationship with its animal inhabitants.”
No, the game is yet to be signed by Ubisoft, but it may still see the light of day sometime… here’s keeping our fingers crossed for an absolutely beautiful sequel to one of the best games in recent years.
