Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo Respond to NPD Figures

NPD-Logo-small Now that you might have read the US console sales figures for the month of April, it’s time to hear what Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have to say on the matter.

Although the Grand Theft Auto franchise has been exclusive to the PlayStation consoles for a long time, the fourth entry in the series went multiplatform, and that has turned into quite a disaster for the Sony camp, as the Xbox 360 version of the game outsold the PS3 version by 850,000 copies, totaling 1,850,000 copies.

SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton is still happy with the results, though, claiming that “PS3 momentum is fueled by enthusiasm for Blu-ray” and that the console “remains on pace for a breakthrough year.”

“The tremendous legacy of Grand Theft Auto on PlayStation, combined with the blockbuster launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue packed a one-two punch with consumers at retail this month,” Tretton added.

Nintendo did not have anything substantial to say since they are still on the top, but company marketing VP Cammie Dunaway commented: “Our belief in appealing to a broad, diverse audience of players continues to resonate with consumers, and we look forward to continuing our outreach to an expanded audience with the launch of Wii Fit next week.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft senior VP Don Mattrick boasted, “This year will be the largest in the history of the video game industry, with Xbox 360 leading the charge in the U.S.”
