Harrison: Online-enabled Games the Future

Making shockwaves on gaming sites last week was Infogrames president and former Sony executive Phil Harrison, who suggested that the company might be moving away from single-player games. Adding to those comments, Harrison has commented that linear single-player gaming may be on its way out in favor of online-enabled, downloadable content-powered titles.
“I think the single-player, disconnected console game is probably in its dotage,” he told Videogaming24/7. “Now, that doesn’t mean that those games aren’t relevant going forwards, but they will be enhanced by community features being embedded in them, or downloadable content becoming an inherent part of the experience, or some kind of user-generated content will be part of the experience.”
Reminds me of LittleBigPlanet, which he triumphantly unveiled at a press event last year.
Harrison further added that a “relatively linear-single-player without online connectivity” is going to be more difficult to get into development in the future.
