EA Testing Viability of Standalone Expansions

12416 EA is looking into standalone expansions by releasing Kane’s Wrath on Xbox 360 next week. The publisher is hoping to “test the waters” through the Command & Conquer 3 expansion; the PC version requires a copy of the original game, though the Xbox 360 version does not require so.

“We’re going to test the waters here with the Xbox 360 version as a standalone version,” lead producer Jim Vessella told Shacknews. “If the fans and the audience like that formula, then perhaps we’ll investigate the standalone on PC in the future.”

When asked why they did not do the same for PC, Vessella replied: “the whole attachment to the base game is a formula that we’ve used for over a decade now with expansion packs. It was something that we were really comfortable with, we wanted to keep it that way for the PC.”

Let’s hope they do the same thing for PC expansions as well. Finding out those pesky discs once you have played them can be quite a hassle.
