Duke Nukem isn’t exactly dead. Sure he’s been relaxing after saving the world dozens of times but that’s how these things work, right? With 3D realms finally making some concrete progress on Duke Nukem Forever another portion of their company is bringing back a name from the days of pixellation and the gaming era when logos were a simple image on the screen, no animations or funky videos.

Apogee. If you’ve been gaming for long enough, you’ll recognize it. It’s been more than a decade since a game was put out under that company name, with everything after 1996’s Stargunner being released with the 3D Realms branding. With a big project already underway for consoles and PCs, the revived Apogee is turning to handheld ventures. They’ll be creating an episodic trilogy for both the DS and PSP called Duke Nukem Trilogy.

The first episode, Critical Mass will be coming out starting summer of 2009 with Chain Reaction and Proving Ground to follow. Although the storyline for both the PSP and DS versions of the game will be identical, each game will be developed to best utilize the kind of gameplay and mechanics of each handheld.
