new 360 dashboard While this wasn’t announced at Microsoft’s E3 conference, it is a major megaton: the upcoming update will allow you to install Xbox 360 games to the console’s hard drive! Revealed via Major Nelson’s blog, the installation will improve load-times and reduce DVD drive noise, though you will still need the disc in the drive to play in order to verify that you own the game.

The update will also introduce new display modes, including 16:10 over VGA or HDMI, with support for 1440×900 and 1680×1050, the common resolutions for 19″ and 22″ LCD monitors.

Additionally, the update will let you browse and buy Xbox Live Marketplace content on the PC from the Xbox website. This will allow users to shop remotely and go back home to see the content downloaded on the connected console.

This is a great time to buy a Xbox 360!
