Take Two Promises To Make Profit Without New GTA

July 22nd, 2008 Posted in News by Will Prusik

Many video game companies rely on their one or two specific cash cow IPs to make their operation profitable. Microsoft failed to turn a profit on the Xbox 360 until Halo 3’s release. Nintendo rakes in piles of cash year after year with a steady stream of Mario products. Take Two has profited greatly from the Grand Theft Auto series and are assuring the public that despite no release of a GTA title this coming year they still plan on showing a profit.

Strauss Zelnick, the company’s chairman, points to various other franchises like Bioshock, Midnight Club and 2K Sports that have performed very well and states that many steps have been taken to reduce the operating cost of the company. With a shaky economy many might doubt the viability of the video game industry, but in past economic crises people have sought escapist entertainments in droves and thus far the performance of the gaming industry versus the rest of the US economy has followed this trend.
