id_software_logo_qjgenth Shacknews reports that id Software has turned down publisher offers to develop a massive multiplayer version of its famous shooter series Quake. In an interview with the site, company president John Carmack revealed that the studio had gotten several offers of “good money” to develop a Quake MMO; he added that the company would not be attempting a similar project anytime soon.

“id has no interest in MMO development,” he said. Carmack added that despite being familiar with the technology, he is also “fully cognizant” of the challenges and risks of creating a game in the genre.

The studio is currently developing an online web-based version of Quake 3 Arena dubbing it Quake Live.
