Not to toot my own horn, but it seems that my predictions as to what it’d take to get the Australian ratings body to allow Fallout 3 to be released was more or less right on. As the big issue was the drug use and the realistic inventory icons (pills, hypodermics and the like) for the various ‘chems’, it seems that the fix was relatively simple. They replaced the more realistic depictions of the drugs with stylized icons. They also took out any animations depicting the character as actually taking the drugs.
While some might complain about the free speech aspects of this, especially considering the Fallout games have always included the negative aspects of drug use (addiction, withdrawal) I’m sure anyone in Australia who’s as excited about the game as I am will label it a resounding victory.
