Modders Make Wii DVD Application

Comparisons of graphical capability aside, the only thing the Nintendo Wii lacks when compared to the Xbox 360 and the PS3 is the ability to play DVDs. There have been rumors floating around about DVD-capable Wiis for some time but given the still high selling rates of the console, Nintendo likely doesn’t want to do anything thing to slow down production. Some creative individuals have come up with a Homebrew application to allow Wii owners to use their consoles to play DVDs.

It’s doubtful that most owners will go for this method however as if you own a Wii it’s likely you have a regular DVD player as well. It also involves using the Twilight Princess hack to install homebrew software onto your Wii and many of the average consumers are hesitant about doing anything of that sort to their own items, especially since any damage done to the system in that manner won’t be covered under the warranty. A user who tried the trick also warned that while playing DVDs the Wii’s fan isn’t running which could cause overheating and thus damage to the unit.
