Text Adventures Come To iPhone

August 14th, 2008 Posted in News by Will Prusik

In the dark ages of gaming many preferred the robust creations of ones own creativity and imagination to the bland, pixellated graphics that were cutting edge at the time. An enterprising individual has brought these classic tales to the iPhone through an application called Frotz. The program is based off the original Z-Machine engine from Infocom, the original program that the various text games were based on. It comes pre-loaded with a few of the public domain games and allows for easy finding and downloading of other titles.

It seems that just as there is a counter-culture movement of people who prefer classic Nintendo and Super Nintendo gaming to the modern marvels of complex controls and fancy graphics, there are plenty of gamers who enjoy the relatively simplistic text-based adventure scheme. If you’re one of those people and happen to own an iPhone, get Frotz for your fix. The best part? It’s free.
