Digital distribution is already a big thing, with Xbox Live pulling in almost $200 million for Microsoft and EA earning $90 million through online sales in three months. But five years from now, it’s going to get way better, as analyst Michael Cai at Parks Associates predicts that online-enabled consoles like the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii will generate $8 billion in revenue in 2013.
He sees growth in these services through “avatar-based microtransactions” for services such as PlayStation Home, as well as subscription fees for console MMO games and more. It will helped by an ever-increasing base of broadband Internet users.
Cai additionally notes that while Microsoft leads the online space for now, Sony and Nintendo may catch up soon.
