Nintendo “Flattered” By Microsoft’s Avatars

September 8th, 2008 Posted in Business, News, Xbox 360

With enough work you can create rough approximations of yourself and your friends in games like Mass Effect or Oblivion, but nothing beats creating Miis of all your best buddies and having them square off in a rousing, heart-wrenching game of tennis. In an industry where even working partners can sue each other over patents and whatnot, the announcement that Microsoft was creating their own customizable avatars seemed like it would be tilling the earth for a ripe crop of lawsuits.

Not only is Nintendo not pursuing legal action, Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo of America has said that they’re actually flattered by the imitation. “Copying is a way flattering, so we’re very flattered,” he said, invoking the ancient chestnut that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”.
