Call of Duty, that is. After a long and glorious history as a World War II shooter, developer Infinity Ward got its hands on the title and crafted a gem of a shooter. Taking the popular series in a fresh new direction– with the WWII shooter having grown stale– they created the much-acclaimed Call Of Duty 4, putting the player into a modern setting with authentic guns and technology.

While the fifth title is in the hands of Treyarch who will be bringing the series back to its WWII roots (although they’re trying to keep it interesting by setting it in the Pacific theater and the Eastern Front) the sixth title will once again be handled by Infinity Ward. It’s currently set for release in 2009 but no other information has been released. Infinity Ward is rumored to be working on a sci-fi shooter, but given the history of real-world settings and gritty realism the series has based much of its success on, it’s hard to say if this has anything to do with the newest Call Of Duty title.
