Rumor: Google Buying Valve?

September 17th, 2008 Posted in Business by Rajiv Ashrafi

logo_valve1 Citing “well placed sources,” The Inquirer speculates that Google is going to buy Valve “any second now.” The rumor has been picked up by Edge Online and MCV, among others, adding credibility to the rumor.

Apparently, Google is lusting after Valve’s Steam, a digital content delivery platform, hoping to use it for god-knows-what. Lending much more possibility of such a buyout happening is Gabe Newell (head honcho at Valve) revealing last month that the studio is approached “a couple of times a week” by potential acquirers or investors. However, Newell also said that they are “super happy” to be independent.

While Valve is yet to comment on the matter, Google has not ruled out a possible acquisition of the game developer.
