There are definitely some titles everyone knows will sell well. Usually they’re sequels to a popular games or new titles from an existing IP/universe or the newest offering from a well-loved developer. Sometimes new titles come out that have built up a following based on their potential alone.

Mirror’s Edge, the upcoming first-person free-running based action adventure title is innovative enough and stylish enough to merit lots of talk and notice even before the title has hit the shelves. Martin Frain, DICE’s marketing director says he’s expecting the title to sell at least three million copies.

He credits this to effective marketing and the title’s recognizable style. Frain says that within most genres, all screenshots will look the same as other games in that same genre. “Some games do a good job with a unique look.” The title also holds a lot of potential because while the action-adventure genre is primarily done from a 3rd person perspective Mirror’s Edge puts you in the 1st person. Most 1st person titles are shooters as well, with very little fast-moving perspective changes to allow you to aim effectively. Although Mirror’s Edge definitely allows you to run and gun if you so desire, the game will likely give a lot of preference to a more evasive style of gameplay.

We’ll see if Mr. Frain’s guess is correct. Sometimes even the most hyped, anticipated game can be an utter failure. No matter how interesting the concept, no matter how amazing the graphics, if the gameplay is terrible, it’s going to flop.
