Valve: Wii Development Riskier Than On PS3

October 7th, 2008 Posted in News, Wii by Erich Jurgens

Valve has never been shy about letting everyone know how much they dislike developing on the PlayStation 3. More often than not if any given Valve title is on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the PlayStation version will receive less attention, post launch, or even be released late. it would be logical for someone to assume that the PlayStation 3 is Valve’s least favorite console, at least to develop for, but during an interview the marketing director for Valve, Doug Lombardi, said that PlayStation 3 is a better choice than the Wii.

“It’s much easier to take our games to the PS3, because of the horsepower of that hardware, than it is to the Wii because Wii is very different with its input devices and lower tech. If we were going for the Wii we’d have to go for a whole new game that’s designed for that platform. That’s an expensive proposition and riskier than just getting some good PS3 developers on board.”

Now, that is just for Valve, Lombardi isn’t saying the Wii is more risky in general, just for the types of games that Valve produces.
