Next Blizzard MMO Not WoW Sequel

After four years Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is still going strong. Despite the huge overhead involved in keeping things running smoothly for the world of Azeroth the company is pulling in huge profits from the game. With the game’s second expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, set to release in less than a month they’ll likely be seeing even more cash.

The news that Blizzard is working on a new MMO of course got everyone abuzz. Rumors flew and many predicted they were working on a new version of World of Warcraft designed to take advantage of the continually improving video capabilities of computers.

Blizzard however has confirmed that the new MMO they’re working on is not a sequel to World of Warcraft. Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said, “We’re not trying to replace World of Warcraft with this new MMO. We’re trying to create a different massively multiplayer experience, and hopefully World of Warcraft will still be going strong when that one is released.”

This of course invites conjecture as to what it could be. A Diablo MMO project seems unlikely as Diablo 3 can essentially act as an action MMO. Since the last game Blizzard created that wasn’t one of their three flagship properties was in 1995, it seems unlikely it’d be a completely new offering. I’m putting my money on a Starcraft MMO as the sci-fi MMO hasn’t been done quite as well as Blizzard likely could. Most of them have either been a brand new IP that failed to garner popular support or poorly executed.

With Stargate Worlds and a KOTOR MMO looming in the future it’s likely that Blizzard is looking to get their fingers into this pie before it’s been completely divvied up.

I hope this new MMO from Blizzard will have a booming in-game economy that uses in-game currency like wow gold.
