Atari Officially Publishing Ghostbusters

Rumors are commonplace in the gaming industry. Many turn out to be hoaxes or pure flights of fancy but often the most persistent rumors turn out to be true. Nintendo released the DSi after denying the existence of a redesigned hand held for months. One rumor that had been circulating heavily before today was that Atari had picked up Ghostbusters: The Video Game after Activision dropped it.

Today the internet rumor mill shows its power once again as Atari confirms that they’ve signed a deal with developer Terminal Reality to publish the title. Phil Harrison, president of Infogrames Entertainment (Atari’s parent company) voiced his excitement: “There’s no more thrilling Ghostbusting experience to be had, short of building your own proton pack.”

The game is set for a wide base of releases, coming out for the Wii, Nintendo DS, PS3, PS2, Xbox 360 and PC. The plot takes place two years after the second film and has pretty much all the original players signing on: Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson are all on board to voice their characters. Even relatively minor players like Annie Potts (secretary Janine Melnitz) and William Atherton (the infamous Walter Peck) will be involved.

Unfortunately Atari hasn’t even set a tentative month for release although they have said that they were looking to release the title around the time of the film’s 25th anniversary release which is in June of next year. Sony is planning on releasing a Blu-ray version of the film then so it’s possible we could see some sort of special package for the PS3 that contained both the film and the game.
