Mother Horrified By Scrabble Vulgarity
While the biggest source of crude language in gaming usually comes from online opponents squeaking out racial slurs and curses it seems that a DS title has offended a parent. Nintendo has often been focused on keeping their products family-friendly so it seems surprising that a product with a 3+ rating would cause such a fuss.
A mother in the UK gave her eight year old son a copy of Ubisoft’s Scrabble Interactive for the popular handheld which seems like a good choice to help improve a growing boy’s thinking skills and vocabulary. Unfortunately to her surprise the game seemed intent on adding a whole slew of words inappropriate for an eight year old. First the game came up with ‘tits’ which you might assume would have some connection to birds such as the titmouse, but the dictionary did indeed list it in its slang capacity. The dictionary included other words like “toke” and “f*ckers”. A spokesman from Ubisoft of course pointed out that there is a ‘junior’ mode for the game that censors objectionable content, but it seems a bit ridiculous that any of these words would even be in a scrabble game.
