CNN Says PS3 “Dying On The Shelves”

December 16th, 2008 Posted in Business, News, PlayStation 3, Sales

News network CNN has been brutally attacking the Sony console via an article. The news story runs under the headline “Sony’s PS3 A Sinking Ship: Sales Plummet” and goes on to point out that the PS3 isn’t doing very well in sales despite the holiday season being in full swing. While the economy is doing poorly by all accounts, the PS3 is the only console whose sales have dropped dramatically since last year. In November of 2007 the PS3 sold 466,000 units while this year that number dropped to 378,000.

The writer of the article goes on to explain the reasons why he believes the PS3’s sales are suffering. Some of them are quite logical: the high price of the PS3 versus the other consoles coupled with the suffering economy while others are a bit ridiculous. He cites the lack of appeal of the Blu-ray drive built into the system as being because the differences between a standard DVD and Blu-ray disc are negligible on a TV smaller than 50″, which just isn’t the case.

The dropoff in interest due to the Blu-ray drive does have a little to do with the fact that many people aren’t ready to switch to an HD format, but it has more to do with the fact that at the PS3’s launch it was the best intersection of quality and price for Blu-ray players on the market. Now there are soundly functioning Blu-ray players for relatively low costs. See it here

I agreed, I prefer xbox360 and it suits my style most. Ps3 is good at blu-ray but I’m ok with dvd.
