Microsoft Says Scratched 360 Discs Affect Few

Microsoft has recently been hit with a class action lawsuit over another issue with the manufacturing of the Xbox 360. Very early on into the console’s lifespan I recall a Youtube video that showed someone inserting a brand new disc into the console and the lifting it up, turning it over and then putting it back down. When they took out the disc it was scratched to the point of being unusable.

The class action lawsuit has to do with this issue. The class action lawsuit says that Microsoft was aware of the disc scratching issue before the console was released and did nothing to correct it. The suit also touches on the fact that instead of fixing the problem Microsoft set up a disc replacement service that charged console owners.

Microsoft has begun to counter starting with a statement that the problem has affected less than 1% of the total customers.  Their representative continued: “Xbox 360 is designed so that it will not damage a game disc as long as the console is not moved while the disc is spinning. Too much movement of any game console, not just Xbox 360, can cause scratches on a disc.” Unfortunately for those behind the suit there are warnings online, in the user manual and on a sticker that covers the disc tray which new console owners have to removed to use. Speaking as a consumer I have little sympathy for those who don’t read whatever manuals or warnings are included and then complain that their products don’t work correctly.
