Capcom justifies charging for Resident Evil 5 multiplayer

Capcom has recently issued a statement regarding the fact that they will be charging for the Resident Evil 5 Versus mode that we learned about earlier today:
Although Versus mode makes use of the assets that exist in the game, the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5,” the publisher said. “We have never included a versus mode in Resident Evil before, and as well as the costs of development of the feature, there’s also additional bandwidth costs associated with it.
So basically they are saying that since it’d never been in the game before, and it wasn’t originally on the drawing board it’s ok to charge for it. I guess it makes sense…
But, if Resident Evil 5’s matchmaking is going to be anything like Street Fighter IV’s, I’ll save my 5 bucks.

I feel you on the SFIV matchmaking. Played online for the first time a few days ago and got my ass handed to me multiple times. Went 1-16 before deciding to return it back to gamefly. There ought to be matchmaking for similarly skilled players. I think the option was actually available when you customize the settings, but the way I was getting beat, I don’t think it helps much.
