FileFront shutting down

March 25th, 2009 Posted in Business

Ziff Davis has announced that FileFront, the popular download service that has been online since 1999, will be shutting down its operations “indefinitely” on March 30. FileFront has long been one of the most popular download sites and mirrors for patches, mods, tool and demos on the web.

Ziff Davis is looking to sell or close its videogame related businesses — last year 1UP was sold to UGO, who also expressed interest in acquiring FileFront.

You can read the farewell message here.

I grew up using filefront and fileplanet, and then fileplanet went into a charging spee, forcing old free subscription-based customers to pay for the service they’d been getting free for about 3-4 years. It was at this point i became thoroughly loyal to filefront, and looked always to find new game/ software and mirrors to be there, and they were. Recently, fileplanet has changed theur policy to enable the old free subscriptions to download files. I can only hope that fileplanet will never again cut us off until we pay for a subscription. farewell filefront; we litterally will be lost, finding mirrors, signing up for novelty sites just to download a file.
