First Bioshock 2 Gameplay Trailer Released

While the viral marketing website gave us some interesting hints and details to mull over, nothing satisfies your appetite for news quite like the meaty taste of actual gameplay footage. It looks like the first one for Bioshock 2 has hit the internet. Go here to see it first, because I’m going to be spoiling some of the details after the break.

It seems that Big Daddys aren’t quite as absent as some thought; namely, you’re one yourself. Though you donned the outfit in the first game you were still restricted to your own arsenal of weapons. In Bioshock 2 you’ll be able to utilize the powerful drill arm. The big sister is shown, though only briefly as you chase her down, with the scene ending with her smashing a glass wall and letting the ocean in. Interestingly Tenenbaum (yes she’s back) is on the radio and refers to ‘her’ in such a way that hints that the big sister may be a singular entity, versus the multiple Big Daddys.

The second half of the trailer shows the player defending a little sister from a swarm of splicers as she extracts ADAM from corpses. While the escort mission was incredibly annoying overall, if they’re including this as a method of getting ADAM at will I’m sure many won’t complain. The only weapon they show beyond the drill arm is a rivet gun, but they will still be featuring several types of ammunition. In fact they’ve upped your offensive capabilities somewhat as you’ll be able to have both a plasmid and a weapon readied simultaneously; no more switching between the two.

The only negative part I’ve pulled out of this is that when the Big Sister smashes in the window you put away both your plasmid and your weapon, meaning that there might be frustratingly long or boring exploration sections. An early story said that the protagonist of #2 would bear the surname of “Abbott”, but at the end of the trailer a little sister clearly says “Mr. B”. Has the plot been changed? The name? Or was the whole story simply meant to throw people off the trail of any real details. The fact that the player can use plasmids hints that he might become a Big Daddy after his coming to the city, possibly as a means to avoid drowning when a corridor or section floods.
