PS2 outsells PS3 in April

May 19th, 2009 Posted in Analyst, Business, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3

Bad news for Sony, as NPD’s latest April sales reveal that Sony’s PS3 only sold 127,000 units, the lowest since before the release of the 40 GB model in October 2007. To make matters worse, the age-old PS2 outsold the PS3 for the month, selling over 172,000 units.

Granted, the PS2 just received a price cut to $100, which has fueled sales, and might suggest that the PS3 is in desperate need of a price cut as well. If that’s not reason enough for a price cut, the NPD numbers show that the cheaper PS3 SKU outsold the expensive one by 9 to 1.

Price cut? Maybe the most expensive consle to own over its lifetime, the XBOX 360 should cut its price by offering free xbox live

  3. Scarecrow Says:

The PS3 isnt making them $50 million, Sony won’t make any money off PS3 hardware sales due to previous development costs and such.

  5. Todd Says:

50 million is chump change for a company like Sony. Who cares if xbox live is not free? Mine is only 5 bucks a month. PS3 would crush other consoles if they brought the price down. It’s as simple as that.

  9. Brandon Says:

Its so stupid that so many people say the PS3 needs a price cut, because the cheapest 360 that is even close to worth it is only $100 cheaper. and then I don’t have to remind anyone about the RROD(33%) and no Blu-ray. The Blu-ray alone is worth more than the extra $100, plus the internet is free unlike 360 where it is something like $50-$60 a month. so in the long run the 360 will actually cost you more and it isn’t any better than the PS3…So tell me again why the ps3 should drop it prices? other than people that don’t think long term they just see the cheaper price tag and don’t think of the RROD or the 50-60 a year they just see a smaller price tag….

Lets say you get the 360 at $300, then you have it for 5 years that bumps it all the way up to $600 you are paying for it. then lets say you decide you want a Blu-ray player, that is at least another $200 so now you are up to $800 worth for the that stuff. Now say you get a PS3 you pay $400 for the console and it already has a Blu-ray player and free internet. Ok lets say you don’t want a Blu-ray player the 360 would still cost $200 more than the PS3….now which is cheaper?

  10. Dan Says:

I want a console. I don’t want something that plays blu-ray, prepares my breakfast or whatever! I just wanna play! 50 – 60 bucks a month!? I might be doing it wrong cause I don’t pay that much!
Seriously, I love Sony and I used to love their consoles until PS3 not that I hate it but…it’s not worth the money….Come on I don’t want an uber great multimedia center! Good games are enough! I honestly could care less about what the ps3 does or doesn’t! They seriously need a price cut or maybe just a better console…cause ps3 had the potential to be a great console…but sometimes I think they just ruined it with the overpower hardware and “multimedia” center….

  11. Blinky Says:

    @brandon

    > the internet is $50-$60 a month

I presume you mean a year. That all assumes that everyone *wants* online gaming and a Blu-Ray player, which clearly isn’t the case otherwise the PS3 would be outselling the 360 by now.

  12. Brandon Says:

the PS3 IMO has better games than the 360, you’ve got Uncharted and Uncharted 2 on it’s way, MLB The show, Infamous, Killzone 2. I could go on for a while, but it really depends on your game preferences I guess, people get the 360 because it has a bigger game seletion. I would take a smaller seletion with better quality any time.

Yes I typoed I meant 50-60 a year, The PS3 is a “multimedia center” because that is what, at least I would think a lot of people want. For me it is about quality, and the PS3 doesn’t fail 33% of the time and Sony didn’t have to add a 3 year warranty to keep customers “happy”. The PS3 is worth every penny of it’s cost, like I said above in the longrun the 360 is a lot more expensive even without the Blu-ray player.

    @”blinky”
I know there is a small group of people that don’t care about online play, heck I used to be one of them but then I actually tried it out and well now I am addicted, I don’t even play Madden offline anymore. although that could be because last years game sucked and the franchise couldn’t keep me busy.

I honestly think it is about personal preference, you can’t understand why I would want a Blu-ray player or why I love to play online.I in turn can’t understand why you don’t want or like these things and no one is going to be able to convince the other that they are wrong…but it is nice to have a civilized argument about it (:

  13. deviouslaw Says:

Civilized argument, yes, but it all boils down to one utterly concrete fact at the end of the day. PS3 sux0rz.
