Stargate Worlds Beta Applications

May 6, 2008

Nothing’s sadder than a favorite television show going off the air. Sadly unless it’s a cartoon almost every show will expire sooner rather than later. Actors age, grow tired of the same story or even fear being in a certain role so long they’ll never escape it. Many science fiction fans were disheartened to see the end of Stargate SG-1 after ten seasons of interstellar (and occasionally intergalactic) adventure. Two straight-to-dvd films do very little to fill the gap left by the end of one of the longest-running science fiction shows on television.

As many cult sensations do, the Stargate universe lives on through both its spinoff series Atlantis and the upcoming MMO Stargate Worlds. Whether you dream of being one of the powerful jaffa or one of the resourceful humans of Stargate Command, you could get your chance sooner than you think.

FireSky, the game’s publisher has announced that they’re now accepting applications for the beta test. Should you include your thirty page ode to Teal’c’s eyebrow raise? It couldn’t hurt.

Penny Arcade Game Goes Gold

May 2, 2008

108258418446d1cee04394a Hothead Games sends word that obscenely long-named title Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness has gone gold. The game will be released through Steam, as well as through Greenhouse, PA’s own digital content delivery service. The game follows Gabe and Tycho from the comic series, as they combat enemies and solves mysteries in New Arcadia. The game is a result of a close collaboration between Hothead Games and Penny Arcade, featuring distinct artwork and characters designed exclusively by the creators of the comic.

Crash Bandicoot Returns, Rips Off Pokemon

April 30, 2008

an-crash_bandicoot-party Everybody’s favorite marsupial hero, Crash Bandicoot, is returning in Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant, an upcoming action-adventure title in the long-running series. In development at Radical Entertainment, the game is set for release this Fall on the Wii, PS2, PSP, DS and Xbox 360.

In Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant, a rejuvenated Neo Cortex is taking over the world one brain at a time! Cortex and N. Brio devise a new kind of evil – a text-messaging, do-anything device which controls both mutant and bandicoot minds. Armed with his quick-wits and lightening agility, Crash must free his friends, the titans and save the day!

Sounding a lot like Pokemon, the game will let Crash store monsters in his pocket, upgrade them and utilize their powers when they are most advantageous. It will feature a free roaming game world, ala GTA, allowing players to travel and explore through intersecting worlds, with different gameplay options available depending on the creature by the player’s side. Crash also gains new abilities, including a counter-combat system, digging and climbing, among other things.

More information on the game can be found on its official website.

Devil May Cry 4 for PC will be “better”

April 23, 2008

Capcom’s popular hack-and-slash adventure series, Devil May Cry, will be heading to the PC on June 2nd with its fourth installment. However, the game itself won’t be a basic port of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

Instead, this version will include two new modes, Legendary Dark Knight Mode, which means more enemies to fight, and Turbo Mode, which will make things a lot faster. The game will also run at a blazing fast 120fps, compared to 30fps on the console versions, and will support both DirectX9 and DirectX10. A demo will also be available before the full retail release of the game.

Playing a game like this on the keyboard isn’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea, so maybe a use of a 360 controller would be handy.

The June issue of will be giving us a look at the newly announced next-generation Splatterhouse game, being developed by Namco. There are not too many details right now, but there is a lot of weight being held by a title like this. Splatterhouse was a pioneer in horror gaming released in 1988, which eventually lead to some great games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. It was also the first game to ever get a parental advisory disclaimer.

The original game is also available on the Virtual Console for the Wii. Hopefully Rick will be kicking some next-generation ass.

Telltale Launches Strong Bad Website

April 10, 2008

Telltale Games have gone ahead and launched a website for their upcoming Strong Bad episodic content via Wiiware we mentioned earlier today. As promised the site features more details about the game as well as a trailer, so it is certainly worth checking out. What I am simply amazed about is that Wiiware hasn’t even released yet, and its episodic content is already blowing the competition out of the water. It seems strange that apart from Penny Arcade Adventures, nothing else has really appeared on the PS3 or 360 horizon.

The first episode release this June, but for now I’ll leave you with an exert from the website, showcasing the strange hilarity that is sure to ensue.

“Charming. Suave. Muscular. Awesome. These are just a few of the words that Strong Bad would use to describe himself. In a world gone mad, only one man can be trusted to save the day… for himself. A man with a mask. And boxing gloves. And an attitude. A man called Strong Bad.”

So what’s the deal with their episodic content for Wiiware? Well excitingly, you’ll know all in about a weeks time when Nintendo holds a media summit next week. Over the next 6 weeks in particular there will be quite a few media summits, so get ready for some hopefully big announcements to start slipping into the net.

Of course, pricing, details, release dates, and yes videos should be relied upon next week, Chris did try to sneak a few hints out, but being the astute gamers Telltale followers are, Dan Connors wasn’t budging. “I’m tempted to give you a cryptic hint, but our audience is so diligent in figuring stuff out, and the audience that we’ve licensed are diligent in figuring stuff out, that they would figure it out in a second if I gave you any inkling. So all I can say is that it’s an equally attentive audience, dedicated audience, to the Sam & Max audience.”

I guess we’ll have to wait until next week.
