Modern Warfare 2 brings in $550 million so far

It’s no secret that Modern Warfare 2 was going to move a lot of dough for Activision, but how much? Well, $550 million, that’s how much, according to the publisher. The game has now sold almost 10 million copies, and has generated over half a billion dollars in revenue in the first five days of its release. Modern Warfare 2 sells close to 9.4 million copies in first week

It’s no surprise that Modern Warfare 2’s launch was anything less than a huge success considering the game was pre-ordered over 4.5 million times but VGCHartz has rounded up some preliminary week one data and the results are quite outstanding.

It seems that all together, the game has sold close to 9.4 million copies across the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC raking in an astounding $600 million for Activision. Now let’s just wait until the holiday season comes and goes and we’re sure to be seeing some ridiculous numbers.

I think it’s safe to say we will be seeing Modern Warfare 3, 4, 5 etc because I mean, it is Activision, after all.

Xbox 360 sells 10 million units in Europe

Europe has usually always come in second to North America when it comes to game and console sales, despite having a larger population. Microsoft today announced that the Xbox 360 has sold 10 million consoles in Europe, Africa and The Middle East (although the latter two only account for a few hundred thousand units).

The console has sold 12 million units in North America and 1 million in Japan since its release back in 2005, with worldwide sales topping 30 million.

Uncharted 2 sells 1 million copies

While Modern Warfare 2 is ravaging the sales charts these days, Sony quietly announced (and what better time to announce it) that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has sold over 1 million units on the PS3. However, the number isn’t confirmed with NPD, so we’ll see how much truth there is to it. But for a game of Uncharted 2’s quality not to already sell a million copies, being the most anticipated PS3 title this holiday season, would be a bit disappointing.

Modern Warfare 2 sells 4.7 million on first day

Modern Warfare 2 is officially a “record breaking” game, selling no less than 4.7 million copies on day one, across all systems in North America and UK (rest of the world wasn’t tracked, meaning the number is definitely higher). The previous record was 3.6 million and was held by Grand Theft Auto 4. Stay tuned for our Modern Warfare 2 review later today.

Wii Fit Plus claims top stop on UK charts

Activision Blizzard posts $15m profits in Q3

The newly merged mega-publisher Activision Blizzard just posted their Q3 financial results, where they revealed profits of just $15 million on a whopping $703 million in sales, which as any businessman and wall street analyst will tell, isn’t the best profit margin. The revenue increased almost $100 million compared to the same time last year, but that year, the company lost $108 million. Now $15 million doesn’t seem like a bad thing at all. Activision Blizzard still expects sales to top $4 billion this year.

PSP Go sells 28,000 units on launch day in Japan

Sony’s PSP refresh console, the PSP Go, was officially released in stores i Japan yesterday, and the first day sales numbers are fairly good: the new handheld device sold 28,275 units. While those are decent first day sales numbers, in comparison to the DSi — which sold 170,000 units during its first two days when it was released a year ago — it’s not that much. The PSP Go was released on October 1 in North America and Europe, and sales numbers for those territories haven’t been released yet.

Capcom expects Lost Planet 2 to sell 3.7 million units

Capcom has made a bold prediction about its upcoming sequel to Lost Planet, tentatively titled Lost Planet 2. The publisher expects to sell 3.7 million units of the game in second half of the 2010 fiscal year, which begins March 2010. It would be quite a feat, since the original Lost Planet sold just over 2 million units.

Buy 2 Wii games at Target, get 1 free

From November 1 (or tomorrow), US retailer Target will run a Wii games promotion, where you can buy two Wii games and get a third one free. Luckily, there are no restrictions, and the deal applies to all Wii games (but only Wii games).

Namco announces Tekken 6 success

If you didn’t know, Tekken 6 made its way onto store shelves shelves on October 27th in North America and October 30th in Europe. But already Namco Bandai is announcing that they have shipped 2.5 million copies of the game.

Of course, this doesn’t exactly showcase the game’s success as these numbers focus on units shipped, not units actually sold. We’ll have to wait until the title has been available for at least a week before we see those numbers.

Anyone planning on picking up Tekken 6 if you haven’t done so already?

Xbox 360 sales reach 34 million

At the recent sales and earnings announcements, Microsoft revealed that their Xbox division almost doubled the profits compared to last year. While overall Q3 profit declines 18 percent to $3.57 billion, the Entertainment and Devices profit jumped from $159 million to $312 million. Likewise, both game sales and Xbox Live revenue increased considerably as well, compared to last year.

Microsoft also revealed that the installed base for the Xbox 360 was now at 34 million worldwide. In comparison, the Wii has an installed base of almost 55 million, while the PS3 base is at 24 million.

Aion takes top spot on US sales chart

The somewhat we–received MMO Aion, NCSofts latest in a long line of MMOs, has sold very well, despite the fact that it’s the first NCSoft MMO in a while to have a paid subscription service. The top 10 best selling PC games, according to NDP:

PS3 still topping Japanese console sales

The effect of the PS3 slim isn’t looking to decrease any time sooner; last week, the PS3 slim was once again the best selling console in Japan, selling just over 30,000 units. However, the Wii came in a (very)close second, only selling 150 console less than the PS3. However, both home consoles were still outsold by the portables, DSi and PSP.

Toys R’ Us dead: buy 2 get 1 free

Toys R’ Us, not always associated with being the biggest videogames retailer, is running a great deal this week for gamers, as it offers one free game if you buy two. Not only does the deal cover all games, regardless price, but also covers accessories like controllers and even MS point cards. Great deal for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

Nintendo doesn’t think there will be hardware shortages this holiday season

Pretty much ever since the Wii and Nintendo DS hit store shelves retailers had trouble keeping the consoles in stock. In fact, trying to get one of the two around the holidays was close to impossible unless you got extremely lucky. However, according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, this year should be different.

Below he comments:

We have a tremendous amount of product in inventory. We’ve been flowing product into retail. We do not expect to have shortages on our products. Now, if we do experience them, I’d love to have that problem, but we’re not seeing that happening this year.

So, if one of your loved ones was wishing for a piece of Nintendo hardware under the tree, their wishes may now be able to come true.

Walmart biggest Nintendo customer

In an interview with CNBC, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that most of the Nintendo systems have been sold through mega-retailer Walmart, which is quite surprising, as Walmart would have to beat Gamestop and Best Buy — who are usually at the top when game sales are in question. However, considering that Nintendo targets a more casual audience than its competitors, it’s reasonable to understand how Walmart is their best customer in the retail space. Reggie also revealed that the newly released Nintendo DSi had already sold 2.2 million units in North America.

PS3 outsells Wii in Japan for first time last month

Without a doubt, the PS3 Slim has been a huge success for Sony, which has had the best selling console ever since it was released a month ago. And, as expected, it has become the top selling console in Japan for the month of September, beating Nintendo’s Wii for the first time, where the Slim sold a shopping 309,939 units. the DS and DSi came in close second, with the Wii trailing in third.

Sony has proudly announced that the PS3 slim has sold 1 million units in only 3 weeks, making it by far the best selling console out there during that period. The new console is not only cheaper, cooler and draws less power than the original PS3, it’s also sold at $299, far cheaper than the original (remember the $599, 60 GB PS3 that launched in 2006?). NFS Shift takes top spot in UK sales charts

In its first week on the charts in UK, EA’s Need For Speed Shift topped the sales charts, knocking Batman: Arkham Asylum of the top spot, and beating fellow racer DIRT 2 as well. Interestingly, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is #8 on the list, despite being almost two years old and the fact that the sequel will be arriving in less than two moths.
