Music Catch 2 Game Review–A Dichotomy At War With Itself

March 24th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Casual, Free, Music, Offbeat, Online, PC, Reviews

One of the strangest games I may have ever seen on Armor Games comes to me in the form of Music Catch 2,  one of the newest titles to show up.

Essentially, a flood of musical notes will flood out of a scale out into a blank black field.  You will then control a small sphere to collect the notes.  Yellow notes serve as multipliers, increasing your score for each note collected.  Red notes reduce your multiplier, and purple notes act as temporary vacuums, sucking every note except the red notes into your sphere.  And when there are hundreds of notes on the field, the action can get pretty frantic.  And yet, often playing in the background is the quietest, most gentle sort of classical / new age music that you’ve ever heard.  It’s soothing and yet hyperkinetic all at the same time, and this dichotomy is the kind of stuff that’ll bend your mind in all sorts of preposterous angles if you’ll allow such to happen.

Fun?  Yes, in its way.  The collection of notes and the avoidance of red notes is fast and frantic.  And the music is calming and gentle, the kind of thing you’d like to take into a hot bath.  So if you can adapt to this strange mix of conditions, then you’ll love Music Catch 2.

Armor Wars Game Review–Good Card Game, Bad Name

Over at Armor Games, I’ve found a piece that might well help if you’ve been jonesing for Magic the Gathering lately–it’s called Armor Wars.

I found it at least a little odd that Armor Games is hosting a game called Armor Wars–can we get just a little more self-referential?  Come on!–but the game itself is at least fun enough.  Basically, it’s a card game, or approximation thereof, in which you play different cards with different effects in an attempt to take out your opponent’s castle.  Or “life points” if you favor the M:TG lingo.  You’ll get to work with creatures, direct damage, and spell effects to generate the various points you need to activate your cards.

This is, of course, fairly standard–anyone who’s played Magic in the last ten years will pick this game up and run with it.  Most of what decides a win or a loss, sadly, is the luck of the draw, but it’s still a good casual time waster.  Online play is also available, so you’re not just stuck taking on the computer.

Basically, Armor Wars is a surprisingly fun time that’s easy to pick up and play as long as you understand a few basics.

Cell Warfare Review–Bio Blastin’ Fun

If Geometry Wars was a little slow-paced for you, then you’ll be surprised and greatly pleased by Armor Games‘ new addition, Cell Warfare.

Playing almost exactly like Geometry Wars, only with keyboard and mouse, you’ll move around a closely-defined field, blasting rival cells in a variety of game modes, complete with an achievement menu.

It’s extremely fast paced, requiring you to both keep track of your cell as you blast the competition but also keep track of where the competition is to blast.  Cell Warfare requires an incredible amount of focus to play fully, and it’s this focus that actually makes it something of an improvement over Geometry Wars.  First, the price is better–Cell Warfare is free.  Secondly, Cell Warfare’s requirement of increased focus lends more depth to the game, making it a marked improvement.

Cell Warfare is a very fun casual game with lots of nifty features, and you’ll definitely enjoy it if you even vaguely liked its predecessors.

Crop Circles Game Review -More Of The Same, But Fairly Well Done

Another round of joy comes to us from the good folks at Armor Games, and this time it’s called Crop Circles.

At first glance, Crop Circles is another fifty-wave tower defense game.  And the first glance will prove surprisingly correct on this run.  The key difference to this one, not always found in a tower defense game, is that you’ll get to establish the path the aliens that are invading your farm have to take.  From there, it’s a fairly simple matter to lay down ordnance in suppressing, interlocking fields of fire sufficient to wipe out the alien horde and keep it out of your barn, because who KNOWS what those filthy alien scum will do to your livestock.

Casual gaming in the extreme, if you’re a fan of tower defense games then you’ll definitely like this newest edition.  But if you’re not into tower defense, even vaguely, then Crop Circles will prove worse than an M. Night Shyamalan movie about them.

Super Mafia Land–Someone’s Probably Gonna Get Whacked For This

I don’t know if it’s going to be Nintendo or the Gottis that land on these guys first, but going out to Armor Games is going to show you a reason that someone is going to be sleeping with the fishes.

It’s called Super Mafia Land, and it’s almost a frame-for-frame knockoff of Super Mario Brothers 2.  Call it an homage if you like, but the key thing is that they took it apart pretty nicely and repackaged it.  Basically, it’s the exact same game, only with different characters.  And not even that many different characters, either—I saw Shyguys and Phantos and Birdos running around shooting eggs at me and stuff.  The gameplay is even identical—where you pull vegetables and such out of the ground and throw them at the various monsters.  The only significant difference is we’re not playing with Toad and Luigi any more.  Now it’s Bruno and Giuseppe.

If you’ve been missing Super Mario Brothers 2, and you don’t want to drag your eight-bit Nintendo out of the basement and hook it back up, then Super Mafia Land is just the game for you.

The Last Stand 2 Review – Casual Zombie Blasting Fun For All

You’ve really got to love the whole casual gaming concept.  It’s given us some titles that are, incongruously, more fun than the equivalents in the massive console market.  That’s hard to believe, I know, but when you try some of these you’ll really be amazed.

For instance, swing on out to Armor Games and try a little title called The Last Stand 2.  Fairly new, it was only available to play back in the latter half of 2008, and is a simple “move the arrow over the zombie and click until there isn’t a zombie there any more” game.  There are two parts to the game, which is an interesting mix.  First, there’s a strategy element in which you’re given twelve hours to “do stuff”.  The stuff in question includes repairing barricades that repel zombies and keep them from eating you, searching for the various weapons you can use in-game, and looking for survivors who will allow you to repair more barricade in less time and will also use the weapons you find.  Second, the actual gameplay, which is point and blast away until the zombies run out.

Being able to use various weapons is surprisingly fun, and having the strategy element forces you to do more than just blast zombies mindlessly.  It’s a game that will simultaneous stretch your mind and relax it, giving you all the fun of a shooter and all the brain-stretching goodness of a strategy sim.

As casual games go, The Last Stand 2 is a clear winner.
