Microsoft using ATI for next-gen Xbox?
Tech site Fudzilla is claiming it’s got information that Microsoft has already given the deal to build the graphics chip for the upcoming Xbox console to ATI. ATI, which already makes the “Xenos” GPU used in the current Xbox 360, apparently has Microsoft satisfied with the current GPU and wants to do more business with ATI, which we can certainly understand — the GPU in the Xbox 360 has pretty much been the only stable part of the console over the years. The rumors also suggest that the new Xbox will launch i 2012.
However, Fudzilla, as usual, never cites any sources so this is pure speculation, at best, and the site isn’t known for having the best track record out there when it comes to rumors.

ATI has had the edge over Nvidia for dew months, especially in the mid-range segment of graphics cards. The newly announced Radeon HD 4770 is the first desktop graphics card to be build on a 40nm process, and the first reviews of the card are all positive; the $99 card delivers great performance and competes with Nvidia models that cost twice as much.
Check out the reviews at Xbit Labs, PC Perspective and Hot Hardware.
Radeon 4890 listed at online retailers

ATI’s upcoming high end graphics card, the Radeon HD 4890, is beginning to appear at online retailers. The new card, which is based on the architecture of the very successful 4870/4850 series, is clocked at a higher speed; 850 MHz and has a faster memory as well, at 3.9 GHz (GDDR5).
The new card is supposed to compete with the Nvidia’s new refresh of cards, at least until both companies release their next generation graphics chips later this year. The new card is listed from 260 Euros to 280 Euros at select retailers. It’s expected to be released (and announced) later this month.
ATI ships 50 millionth Wii GPU
AMD’s graphics division, ATI, has announced that they’ve shipped their 50 millionth Wii GPU, codenamed “Hollywood”. It thereby becomes ATI’s most successful console GPU. ATI’s Rick Bergman said of the milestone:
“We’re proud to provide the ATI ‘Hollywood’ chip as the cool and quiet graphics engine that factors so prominently in the overall enjoyment for Wii owners. AMD counts Nintendo as a valued customer and we continue to work together to make console entertainment a growing phenomenon worldwide.”
ATI previously supplied Nintendo with GPUs for the GameCube, and are currently supplying Microsoft with GPUs for the Xbox 360.
AMD Announced ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 Series

AMD has announced its brand new graphics platform for notebooks, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series. Since I currently have an HD 3000 series which has been working more than fine so far, I’d be quite interested in what the HD 4000 will bring to PC gaming, and particularly to notebook gaming.
The new graphics platform should be twice as fast and it should support GDDR5 RAM and Microsoft DirectX 10.1. An HD 4000 card will encode and decode HD video and it will get that DVD content to 1080p resolution without involving the CPU. Hi-definition audio via HDMI with 7.1 digital surround sound and DisplayPort Audio are other features of the HD 4000. These are going to be the first mobile graphics platform to offer such services.
The new graphics cars are to be expected in Q1 of 2009. You will be able to choose from ATI CrossFireX-capable HD 4800, the HD 4600, the HD 4500 and 4300. The first one will combine two GPUs while the second one is optimized for performance and energy efficiency. The last two will prioritize battery life but they will still get the job done. Expect Asus and MSI laptops to carry the new ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000, but soon others will follow.
3D Gaming and HD Video Coming to Netbooks?

I bet you’ve desperately tried to play games on your newly acquired netbook. Sometimes you might have even managed to make some older games run right? What if NVIDIA or ATI introduced a graphic card in those tiny netbooks? Would you buy netbooks as a gaming device only?
NVIDIA has announced plans to release a mobile GPU, the 9400M to work together with that Intel Atom processors to deliver 3D gaming and HD video to netbooks. The 9400M will get you 1080p video decoding, dual-link DVI out, DirectX 10 graphics, CUDA and OpenGL.
The competition is also going to work out some sort of a solution for netbooks. AMD will roll its Yukon ultramobile platform and it will pair it with a mobile Radeon GPU from ATI.
And let’s not forget about VIA. VIA announced its Trinity platform which will get you a Via Nano processor, the VX800 northbridge and an S3 GPU. It will support too HD videos and DirectX 10 gaming.
It all sounds good, but I don’t see myself playing games on my netbook. How about you?

NVIDIA 1.5GB Quadro FX 4800 to Power Up Future Gaming Machines?

What graphics card do you currently posses? Do you use it much for playing games or you’re just a console gamer?
Well this NVIDIA 1.5GB Quadro FX 4800 card might make you think twice about switching to playing games on your computer. Sure you might want to choose the 5800 high-end version which costs only $3,499. For those of us on a budget there’s always the 4800 which is the cheaper solution at half the 5800’s cost. The 4800 has a GT200 graphics processor with 1.5GB of memory will handle perfectly the work load on that workstation of yours. But unfortunately it might not be the designated card for your PC gaming.
And if you are looking for a graphics card of any sort make sure you check ATI’s offers. They could get you the same performance for the cheaper price.
