Gearbox claims Borderlands the fastest selling new IP in 09

Well, this isn’t surprising at all; Gearbox, developers of Borderlands, claim that Borderlands is the fastest selling new IP of 2009, which is no surprise, as it’s probably the most known new IP of 2009, not to talk about the most anticipated one. The only other notable new IP was Prototype, and, completely unsurprisingly, both games are looking to get sequels in the near future.

Borderlands is enjoying great critical and commercial success at the moment, and the game has lined up its first DLC, called “The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned“, which will be available on November 24th for $10 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, developer Gearbox didn’t mention a PC version of the DLC, which is a bit disappointing, to be honest, especially if it turns out that the DLC won’t be available on the PC at all.

Cliff Beszinski, better known as Cliffy B, showed his love for Borderlands by tweeting “Borderlands, I adore you. You’re Diablo for a generation raised on first person shooters. I want a Claptrap.” He’s quite right, Borderlands might just be the Diablo of FPS games, considering that you’ll be spending a lot of time looting and managing your inventory. It’s no secret that the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification is pretty strict when it comes to rating games considering their highest rating is MA15+ so the fact that they have turned their heads to Borderlands is no surprise.

Of course, the game isn’t actually set to hit Steam until October 30th but Australian gamers who were able to get their hands on a copy prior to its release date have found several instances of censorship. Now, this is all fine and dandy considering is it Australia but according to 2k Games, this wasn’t supposed to happen.

Luckily, the studio is working to get the actual uncensored version onto Steam and ready for its October 30th release date so Australian fans of blood and gore need not fret.

Leaked copies of Borderlands unplayable until October 26th

It seems that some lucky gamers were able to get their hands on a copy of Borderlands before ahead of its October 27th street date. But for those of you who weren’t able to get their hands on a prerelease copy, don’t’ be discouraged as reports are popping up that the game won’t even be playable until October 26th, singleplayer included.

But what gives? Well it seems that 2K Games wants everyone to wait until the game is available to everyone but it has left some gamers unhappy. One German gamer sent the following tweet to Gearbox:

I own a legal PC-copy of Borderlands, and we can’t even play the Singleplayer cause of the shitty Securom-protection

But honestly though, is it really Gearbox’s fault that retailers are breaking the street date? Just be patient, wait it out and everything will be fine, I promise.

Borderlands “sent to die” according to Pachter

October 20th, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in Action, Adventure, FPS, PC, PlayStation 3, RPG, Xbox 360

Game analyst Michael Pachter thinks that Borderlands will be trumped by fellow blockbusters this holiday season, and is effectively “sent to die”, according to Pachter. When asked on Bonus Round what he thinks of the game and its release, Pachter noted,

“Sent to die. I think “Borderlands” is the definition of a game that should have had its own window and not be up against all this stuff. It’s absolutely the same audience. I don’t think it’s as much an RPG as they would like us to believe. If it’s an RPG, “Dragon Age” is going to kick its butt; and if it’s a shooter, “Call of Duty” or something else is going to kick its butt.”

Borderlands hits the stores today.

Borderlands dated for US and Europe

July 23rd, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in Action, FPS, RPG

Back in June, we learned that Gearbox Software will be expecting an October ship date for their sci-fi action RPG Borderlands. Today, we learn from the game’s publisher, 2K Games, that the game will indeed be seeing an October release; slated for the 20th in North America and the 23rd in PAL regions.

In response to questions on how the game will fair against blockbuster titles like Uncharted 2, 2K Games president Christoph Hartmann doesn’t “think we have to be afraid of competition or shy of what’s out there, I think this holiday season is a little bit lighter in triple-A games than last year. It’s actually a good holiday to put something out. … There’s always risk and opportunity. The risk is you have a hard time standing out against established IP. The opportunity is you have a lot of traffic here and it can be a much bigger product at retail than it would be otherwise.”

Borderlands will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Word around town is that it will be the first title in its franchise, so expect a sequel in the future.
